Today we are going to look at an important aspect of search engine optimisation. The topic of Keyword Density is very simple but is very powerful when used properly and can dramitcally increase the free traffic you get from natural search engine results.

What is Keyword Density?

Keyword density is the percentage of the number of times a specific word is used on a page in relation to the total number of words. For example if there were 100 words on a page and the word “SEO” was used 5 times then the density of that word would be 5%. This was calculated by using the following equation (number of times word “x” occours divided by total number of words on the page)

This can be quite a time consuming to check for every word on your page especialy as you will have more checks to do the longer your document/page is. To make things easier for everyone I am making my keyword density analysis tool available to use for free on this sites tools page which can be reached through the link at the top of the website or via the following link: http://www.meatshake.co.uk/tools

Why is Keyword Density Important?

Keyword Density is important because it is one of the indicators that search engine spiders use when indexing your website. They log the keyword density in order to allow their search programs to get a better understanding of what the crawled website is all about. This information is then used by the search engines to help redirect people to the best websites that match their search.

So what does this ultimately mean? Well the better your site is indexed by google for words and phrases that your users search for the more likely the search engine will show your website closer to the top of their page resulting in more free traffic to your website.

Good Methods of implamenting keyword density in order to improve the SEO

The best way of looking at this is to produce good quality writing that is not heavy on slang or irrelevant terminology and stay focused on what you are writing about without to much deviation. Simple eh!

Well, you can actually go a little further than that to increase the efficiency of the ability for you to get traffic for specific quieries to get lots of the free web traffic that you are looking for.

The first step that I take is to go and have a look at the search engines. I type in the word or phrase that I want people to find me using and I visit the first couple of pages in the results and then I use my keyword density tool to find out which words they are using to get that high up for in the search results. I then make sure that when I am writing an article that I use those words as many times as possible but only when required otherwise the text will just be completely rediculous to read and whats the point in getting loads of visitors when they just think that your site is full of strange repetitive text.

Bad Methods of implamenting keyword density SEO

I have seen so many tools online now that offer to improve your SEO and increase the number of visitors to your website by automatically rewritting your text on your site by substituting words for alternatives from a thesaurus. The idea behind this is that you end up with loads of version of the same articles but using different keywords resulting in an increase in the number of results for different words and combinations on search engines. The problem of adopting this strategy is that you end up with loads of articles that just sound absolutely rediculous and even though you get a lot more visitors to your website it is highly unlikely that they will stay and read the trashy writing so what is the point.

Keyword Density Summary

I hope that I have helped to highlight an important aspect of SEO in the form of keyword density analysis. So please pay attention to optimise your keyword density without damaging the quality and meaning of your text and you will be headed in the right direction. Also please be aware that this is not the be all and end all of improving your SEO as there many more pieces of the jug saw puzzle which we will look at later.
